The Silty Pond Mussel is an invasive species of freshwater mussel native to eastern Asia. In 2010, an unidentified mussel was found at a non-profit owned, former aquaculture and fish farm facility in Hunterdon County. After the initial find, samples were taken and later identified as the Silty Pond Mussel, also known as the Chinese Pond Mussel, and treatments were performed to eradicate the species before it spread. The Freshwater Mussel Conservation and Research Center is a converted company clubhouse on land now owned by the City of Columbus. The interior was gutted and remodeled for our use in 2001. Since it is on the Scioto River, we use that water for our mussel holding aquariums. We house 39 species of mussels, as well as hundreds of Ohio native fish and snails.
