The first modern-day, ancient mummy. In 1993, scientists from the University of Maryland at Baltimore mummified an individual who donated his body to science using Egyptian burial methods from over 2,000 years ago. These scientists created replicas of embalming tools and used authentic organic materials, all according to ancient papyri (documents written on a type of paper made from the papyrus plant). The doctors performed the embalming ritual of removing the organs (including the heart, kidney
