On This Day: June 19th 1889 The Enigma Variations by Edward Elgar premiered at St. James's Hall in London. Elgar dedicated the Enigma Variations “to my friends pictured within,” with each variation portraying someone from his close circle. These include his wife Alice, publisher Augustus J. Jaeger, and even Elgar himself. By naming the theme “Enigma,” he posed a challenge that has caused much speculation about a hidden puzzle within the work, which is believed to be a hidden melody, but this has
