NOAA's powerful Global Forecast System model was upgraded today, providing forecasters with a more accurate 4-D picture of how a weather system will evolve. The upgrade is the latest of a number of model improvements rolling out this spring and summer, thanks to increased supercomputing power NOAA acquired earlier this year. The midday run of the American GFS forecast model is in, and this animation shows the progress of an area of low pressure it expects to develop and move east, bringing snow to areas on the north side of the storm. This animation covers the period from Sunday evening through Tuesday night. Most of the snow with this system falls late Monday / early Tuesday.
