The Blitz, from the German word 'Blitzkrieg' meaning 'lightning war' was used to describe the period of intense bombing during the second world war. The first targeted air raid on #London took place on today in 1940 and the capital was bombed for 57 nights in a row. A memorial now stands in Old Change Court, near St. Paul’s Cathedral which survived due to the efforts of the men and women of the London Fire Brigade.
