Highlights of the year at CERN, with numerous physics results, new technologies and much more. Whether you’re passionate about science or simply curious, young or not so young, interested in technology or in international cooperation, 2018 had some wonderful surprises in store for you at CERN. From new studies on the Higgs boson to the start-up of antimatter experiments, the inauguration of the Esplanade des Particules and innovative applications for medicine and society, CERN shone in many fiel

Since 2003, a LHC dipole magnet turned into a telescope has been following the Sun's movements from behind a concrete wall. This is the CAST experiment - hunting for hypothetical "axion" particles that could be produced in the centre of our star ☀️ Find out more about this experiment: https://home.cern/science/experiments/cast | CERN

🕶 Discover CERN in Virtual Reality with this short clip. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) consists of a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets with a number of accelerating structures to boost the energy of the particles along the way. The Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is a general-purpose detector at the LHC. It has a broad physics programme ranging from studying the Standard Model (including the Higgs boson) to searching for extra dimensions and particles that could make up dark matter. Al

Care to know how crystals are studied? This #TeachingTuesday, our CERN–Solvay camp students take you along for a day in the Crystal Lab at CERN. The Crystal Lab is where the crystals used in the CMS Experiment at CERN electromagnetic calorimeter were first investigated and characterised. Today, the laboratory studies the properties of numerous materials and crystals to be used in future particle detectors both in high-energy #physics and in medical imaging. During the camp, the students were abl

CERN pays tribute to Peter Higgs Peter Higgs’ scientific legacy will extend far beyond the scope of current discoveries. The Higgs boson is linked to some of the most intriguing and crucial outstanding questions in fundamental physics. This still quite mysterious particle therefore represents a uniquely promising pathway to physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. | CERN

A new superconducting electrical transmission line for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider uses new materials, a new cooling system and unprecedented technologies. This superconducting line is the first of its kind and allows vast quantities of electrical current to be transported within a pipe of a relatively small diameter. Similar pipes could well be used in towns in the future. Find out more: https://home.cern/news/news/accelerators/successful-tests-cooler-way-transport-electricity | C

Proton collisions at the LHC end on a high(-luminosity) note 💫 During this year, an exceptional volume of data was collected at a collision energy of 13.6 teraelectronvolts (TeV). The integrated luminosity, which relates to the number of collisions recorded in a given amount of time, reached 125 inverse femtobarns for the ATLAS and CMS experiments, and the total is more than 520 inverse femtobarns since 2010. Watch to find out more about what this means. 👇 | CERN

Last week we asked you to guess what this was… 🔎 Here we see the Experimental Linac for Surface Analysis (ELISA), a compact proton accelerator built for exhibition in #CERNScienceGateway – the only one that is ready for demonstrations to the public. ELISA is capable of performing a real Proton Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) analysis, used in real-life to authenticate artworks, among other uses. At Science Gateway, visitors have access to hands-on experiments like PIXE and instruments like ELISA

I often get asked if we have iris scanners to get underground at CERN, as they do in Dan Brown's book, Angels and Demons. And we do have scanners they are part of the checks to make sure we know who's going underground, and that only people who are trained to be there are accessing the experiments. #CERN #DidYouKnow | Particle Clara
