Google may be starting to enforce mandatory app bundles on the Play Store, and killing off easily installable APKs in the process.

Google TV and Android TV will be requiring Android App Bundles that are archivable starting in May 2023 to save storage for users.

This new archiving feature builds on what App Bundles already does by adding a new kind of split APK to the format that can preserve user data and allow other parts of the app to be uninstalled.

Google’s plan is to force Android App Bundles onto TV devices in the same way they did for phones back in 2021. Android App Bundles (AABs) are the publishing format that replaced the ol’ APK file.
