Russian leader Vladimir Putin agreed at his summit with President Donald Trump that the United States and its European allies could offer Ukraine a security guarantee resembling NATO’s collective defense mandate as part of an eventual deal to end the war,

Hungary accused Ukraine of an "outrageous and unacceptable" attack that disabled a Russian oil pipeline supplying the NATO ally—and fired a warning to Kyiv about its reliance on Hungarian electricity supplies. Newsweek has contacted the Ukrainian foreign ministry for comment.

If such a deal takes shape, it could reshape Europe’s post–Cold War security order. Ukraine would gain stronger deterrence against Russia, without being a formal NATO ally.
