The PS2 uses a serial interface called SIO2 to communicate with peripherals like controllers and Memory Cards, which just so happens to be compatible with SPI.

Rather than an optical drive (which wouldn't physically fit in the system and uses a lot of power), the build runs games from a PS2 memory card over USB.
