Across the 2.5-mile parade route, there were big smiles and plenty of sunshine as thousands gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Speakers at a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event at the Utah Capitol, one of many in the state, stressed the importance of continued efforts in the fight for civil rights.

The Movement for Black Lives, a coalition of organizations affiliated with the Black Lives Matter movement, had planned its events under the banner “Reclaim MLK Day of Action.” Organizers planned demonstrations in Atlanta; Chicago; and Oakland, California, among other cities, over the weekend and Monday.
